Chapter Fifteen

Still taped securely to the chair, Natalia was now perched atop a low hill. Surrounding her was a muddy paddock, sloping down on all sides. Facing her at a distance of roughly eighty yards, Brody Sr. stood on another small rise, along with Quinn, Tommy, and a few of the others. Brody Sr. held a pair of binoculars in one hand. When he raised them up to his face, she saw his right hand give a light wave. Natalia could move her neck, her fingers, and her toes, but not much else. Was this target practice? She didn’t see any guns. Brody Sr. handed the binoculars to his eldest son and took what looked like a small radio in return. Natalia inhaled the moist, rural air. It brought her right back to Drosti, to her own the family farm. That was where she’d started her life, and this was where it appeared she might end it. Full circle. Thinking of her family, she wished she’d been a better daughter, sister, aunt. She thought of her friends, Amara, Sade, and Graham. And yes, even Aidan Brody. Would anyone ever find out what became of her? Natalia decided not to spend the last moments of her life wallowing in regret. Whatever Brody Sr. had planned for her, she would face it with eyes wide open.

As usual, she heard the drones before she saw them. It sounded like a massive army of angry bees. From beyond the facing rise, they began to appear. Brody Sr. stood watching with arms crossed, nodding his head in approval as first there were five, then ten, twenty… Natalia counted thirty in all as the large black dots hovered motionless in the air. So, this was their game, their “dry run,” with Natalia as a convenient target: a stand-in it seemed for whatever assassination they had planned next. Brody Sr. raised one hand and then pointed it forward as the drones began racing toward her. They didn’t come in a straight line. They came in a swarm, zipping and swerving, rising and dipping. All for maximum confusion, Natalia realized. She pictured a crowd of bystanders, terrified by the sight, with armed security officers trying to shoot the machines out of the sky, spraying bullets indiscriminately. She heard the gasps and the screams, felt the terror. If only Barnes might know ahead of time, but there was no way to warn him. While the drones continued their mad dance above her, and all around, one in particular hovered motionless, just in front of Natalia and a few feet overhead. Quelling the terror in her heart, Natalia peered directly into the camera, defiant until the end. Hanging beneath the drone was a similar black box that she recognized from the restaurant, with multicolored wires leading out of it. She took in one last breath of precious oxygen… and then she heard the bang. Only, it wasn’t the deafening blast that she’d come to expect. Instead it was more of a pop, followed by twenty-nine more.
